Welcome to the inaugural episode of the SERVANT Magazine podcast! In a exciting first for the magazine, this audio interview serves as a companion piece to the print feature in our forthcoming issue, bridging the gap between deep storytelling and audio conversation. In this episode, host James sits down with Prairie High School alumna Sandy Hoe (’93) to unpack a remarkable life journey that spans continents, cultures, and unexpected ministry landscapes. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Peru, Sandy reflects on the profound pragmatism and generational sacrifice that led her parents to send her to the small, friendly town of Three Hills, Alberta, at just 15 years old.
Sandy opens up about:
The Weight of Opportunity: Navigating family expectations, immigration realities, and what it truly meant to leave everything behind with little more than a promotional booklet and a quiet resilience.
Incarnational Mentorship: Memories of her formative years at Prairie, defining mentorship simply as “older people telling you really hard stuff” out of a deep place of love and spiritual care.
The Posture of a Witness: Her transition into marketplace ministry in Toronto, where God spent years humbling her through teaching ESL to newcomers, stripping away assumptions, and teaching her how to simply witness before speaking.
From quiet observation to organically blooming Bible studies with international newcomers, Sandy’s story is a beautiful reminder that God’s curriculum takes time, and His love is often proven in how long we are willing to stay at the table.
