Dr. Tony Ebel explains why he left insurance to build a subluxation-based, nervous system-focused pediatric, perinatal, and family all-cash practice, and shares the nine-step checklist he used to make the transition: lean into frustration, follow insurance rules while you exit, use congruent language, shift your brand toward pediatrics and perinatal care, increase retention and transition patients to wellness auto-debit plans, drop small insurers first, clearly communicate the benefits of the change to patients, expect some initial patient loss, and run the real profitability math.
He shares his own numbers: losing 50 to 100 patients, overhead dropping about $480,000, collections falling from $1.2M to $800K, and returning to $1.2M within about two and a half years, this time with lower overhead and higher profit.
