You’ve spent your whole life looking for God in church, and you still feel empty. You’re not the only one, and you’re not crazy.
The Second Ascent is for men who gave church their best years and found it wasn’t enough. Church got you here. The work takes you the rest of the way.
Your host, Jason, spent years in ministry, including pastoring a cowboy church in Georgia, before trading the pulpit for the North Georgia mountains. Today he leads men through Sacred Grit and AIR Georgia, and he’s learned something the hard way: God doesn’t live in a building. He lives in your choices. Every real change in a man’s life comes down to a decision made from who he actually is.
Each week, we talk straight about Jesus, identity, manhood, and the second half of life, the things that don’t fit into a Sunday morning. No incense and wooden beads. No judgment. No politics as usual. Just hard questions, honest answers, and a bigger story than the one you’ve been living.
If church got you this far and you’re wondering what’s next, start climbing.
You’ve spent years in the pew. You did everything right. So why do you walk out on Sunday feeling empty?
In this first episode of The Second Ascent, Jason Lyle, former pastor of a cowboy church and founder of Sacred Grit, gives church its due and names where it runs out. For most of your life, the church has been your lamp. That was needed. It gave you structure, community, and a direction toward God. But Proverbs says something most of us were never taught: the lamp was never only on the wall. God placed it inside you.
Today you will learn:
- Why so many men in their 40s and 50s feel empty at church, and why it isn’t a sign something is wrong with you
- What church got right, and why the first ascent was necessary
- What Proverbs 20:27 says about where God has been waiting all along
- What the second ascent is, and why it starts on the inside
Scripture: Proverbs 20:27, “The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all his innermost parts.”

The podcast explores the connection between Christian men and dads who feel empty at church, frustrated with religion, or dealing with church hurt, while searching for identity, meaning, and purpose in midlife and the second half of life through Scripture, Bible study, theology, and the teachings of Jesus, wrestling with the father wound, empty nest, burnout, anxiety, and doubt, rebuilding faith outside the institutional church, discovering their true identity in God, learning how to know God’s will, being born again, growing in prayer, the Holy Spirit, and masculine spirituality, practicing breathwork, cold plunges, and nervous system regulation, and ultimately finding brotherhood, community, and freedom on the second ascent.
