If you’ve been feeling anxious about what’s happening to the Latino community right now — this episode is for you.
Javier Marín is a Venezuelan immigrant, media entrepreneur, co-owner of El Tiempo Latino, and author of Live from America: How Latino TV Conquered the United States. But more than any of those titles, he is someone who has spent decades studying a truth that most people don’t know: this has all happened before.
English-only mandates. Mass deportations. Immigrants thrown in cages regardless of legal status. Corporate America refusing to acknowledge our purchasing power. The word “Hispanic” invented not by us, but by a president looking for votes. None of this is new.
And yet — here we are. 62 million strong. Bad Bunny headlining the Super Bowl. Spanish the second most spoken language in the country.
This conversation is part history lesson, part wake-up call, and part exhale. Because when you know where you came from, the present becomes a little less terrifying.
