“Everything you can imagine is real.” – Pablo Picasso
Every situation has two handles.
One makes the burden heavier. The other makes it manageable.
In this episode of The Okami Kai Chronicles, we explore an idea from the Stoic teacher Epictetus known as “the two handles.” He had an insight that every experience can be approached in different ways. One way leads to resentment and frustration. The other allows us to carry the same weight with more clarity and resilience.
Modern research on gratitude is beginning to explain why this ancient idea still matters. Studies suggest that practicing gratitude can improve mental health, sleep, relationships, and even aspects of physical health by helping regulate the nervous system and reduce the effects of chronic stress.
In this episode we discuss:
• Why gratitude has a “branding problem”
• What science suggests about gratitude and the nervous system
• The Stoic idea of the two handles
• How parents can help children through difficult moments in training
• How adults can reset themselves during frustration
• Simple daily practices that build resilience
Because sometimes the most important change is not what we are carrying.
It is how we carry it.
