What does a powdered donut have to do with love, loss, and a cross-country mission that could change everything? Everything.
Gary Thompson was married to the love of his life, Maureen, for nearly 25 years. She was an architect, a mother of three, a Delta Gamma, a six-foot-one force of nature — and she fought metastatic breast cancer for 11 years before passing on October 21st, 2014. In the days after her passing, Gary walked back into the same donut shop and made a decision: he was going to turn a day of sadness into a day of joy.
Every October 21st since, he has delivered powdered donuts to hospitals, oncologists, nurses, and the people who showed up for Maureen when it mattered most. And now? He's taking that tradition nationwide. In this episode, Gary shares the story behind Team Powdered Donut — a purpose-driven movement built around an Airstream, a Frank Lloyd Wright obsession, a mobile recording studio, and a mission to visit all 74 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers across America. His goal: to collect stories of love from patients, caregivers, researchers, and nurses — and prove that our stories are more connected than we realize.
