Imogen Smalley explores the new regulations around Precision Bred Organisms, and programmes to support the development of Cell Cultivated Products in England.
The Food Standards Agency defines Precision Bred Organisms as ”a way of changing the DNA of plants or animals in a precise way […] These changes must be equivalent to those that could have been made using traditional plant or animal breeding methods.
Her article on the matter can be found in the latest edition of the Cornwall Street Barristers' Civil Team Newsletter.
The regulatory framework discussed by Imogen is only in force across England. However, products containing PBOs can be sold in Scotland and Wales, owing to the United Kingdom Internal Market Act 2020 (UKIMA). In contrast, the processing of such goods in Wales and Scotland is not enabled through the UKIMA. Accordingly, the processing of PBO-products is currently governed in Scotland and Wales by different regulations that apply to GMOs.
