Welcome back to the Design Boss Dialogue Podcast, the interior design business podcast for women who are ready to build businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside.
I want to start this episode with something that might feel like quite a bold statement:
Business does not need to be hard.
Yes, growth can be uncomfortable. There will always be moments that stretch you, challenge you and require you to step into a bigger version of yourself. But there is a huge difference between the purposeful discomfort of growth and running a business that feels relentlessly difficult simply because everything is being held together by your own effort.
After 16 years in the interior design and build industry, and through the work I now do mentoring women inside their own businesses, I've become incredibly passionate about two things that I believe sit at the heart of creating greater ease: your zone of genius and your golden thread.
Your zone of genius isn't simply something you're good at. You might be perfectly capable of managing admin, chasing invoices, wrestling with spreadsheets or handling every tiny detail inside your business, but being capable of doing something doesn't mean you should be spending your best energy there.
Your zone of genius is the part of what you do that feels almost instinctive. It's where your talent, energy and natural ability meet. For an interior designer, that might be your creative vision, your ability to read a space, the relationships you build with your clients or the way you instinctively understand what a home needs.
When you spend too much of your time operating miles outside that space, business naturally starts to feel heavier.
In this episode, I'm exploring how we can begin building structure around our businesses that protects our zone of genius, whilst systemising or delegating the things that don't need our unique energy.
And then we come to your golden thread: that unmistakable piece of positioning that makes somebody think of your name first.
Because I don't believe the answer to standing out in a crowded interior design market is simply more. More content, more posting, more visibility, more hustle. The answer is becoming more unmistakably you.
When you understand what you want to be known for and allow that thread to run consistently through your marketing, your brand, your client experience and everything you put into the world, recognition starts to compound. Eventually, your positioning begins doing some of the work that previously required constant effort from you.
That's where business begins to feel lighter.
Not because your ambition has become smaller, but because you're no longer the only thing holding the entire business up.
In this episode, we cover:
- Why business doesn't need to feel relentlessly hard
- The difference between growth discomfort and unnecessary struggle
- What your zone of genius actually is
- Why being good at something doesn't necessarily make it your genius
- How working outside your zone of genius creates exhaustion
- Creating structures that support rather than drain you
- Why ease isn't the same as laziness or luck
- How solid business foundations create sustainable momentum
- What Lisa means by your “golden thread”
- Why doing more isn't necessarily the answer to standing out
- How positioning helps you become unmistakable in a crowded interior design market
- Why recognition and reputation compound over time
- The relationship between structure, alignment, momentum and ease
- How to recognise whether you're experiencing healthy growth or simply unnecessary hardship
As you listen, I want you to ask yourself three questions:
Where am I making business harder than it actually needs to be?
Where am I spending too much time outside my zone of genius?
And do I really know what my golden thread is yet?
Because ease isn't about shrinking your ambition, caring less or building a smaller business.
It's about building enough structure underneath your business that you no longer have to hold everything up through effort, grit and willpower alone.
The more aligned your business becomes, the lighter it can begin to feel.
