On this episode of Why The Beatles Matter, Sean welcomes Amelia Davis, the longtime steward of the Jim Marshall Archive and curator of the remarkable new book, The Beatles by Jim Marshall: Live at Candlestick Park 1966.
Jim Marshall was the only photographer granted backstage access to The Beatles during their final public concert at Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966. His photographs capture far more than a historic performance. They reveal the humanity of four young men standing at the threshold of a major transition. More than 150 photographs and proof sheets, many never before published, offer an intimate look at the band both onstage and behind the scenes.
In this conversation, Sean and Amelia explore Marshall's unique ability to earn the trust of artists and document moments that others missed. They discuss the process of curating the collection, the stories behind the photographs, and what these images reveal about The Beatles during the final chapter of their touring years. The discussion also highlights the joy, camaraderie, and creative spirit still visible in the band despite the pressures surrounding them.
From backstage doodles on a tablecloth to candid locker room moments, this episode offers a rare glimpse into one of the most significant days in Beatles history and the photographer who preserved it for generations to come.
