This episode ”Strengthening Healthcare in the DOD with Lifestyle Medicine” features Dr. Mary Anne Kiel, a board-certified pediatrician and lifestyle medicine physician with over 21 years of service as a U.S. Air Force physician. Dr. Kiel shares her personal journey to lifestyle medicine—beginning with her own health challenges—and how discovering the power of whole-food, plant-based nutrition transformed her health, renewed her passion for medicine, and reshaped the way she cares for military families.
The conversation explores how lifestyle medicine aligns seamlessly with the mission of military and veterans’ healthcare, supporting readiness, resilience, and long-term health for service members, their families, and the clinicians who care for them. Dr. Kiel discusses the unique opportunities within the Department of Defense to integrate lifestyle medicine at scale, including built-in healthcare access, leadership influence, and existing frameworks like Total Force Fitness.
You’ll also learn how prioritizing the six pillars of lifestyle medicine can help prevent chronic disease, reduce burnout, and build resilience—especially in high-stress environments like military medicine. From supporting family health to strengthening the future military force, this episode highlights how lifestyle medicine truly flips the script on healthcare.
If you’re interested in leadership, prevention, and creating healthier systems that support both patients and providers, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.
The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) is the medical professional society for physicians and other professionals dedicated to clinical and worksite practice of lifestyle medicine as the foundation of a transformed and sustainable healthcare system.
Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.
Lifestyle medicine-certified clinicians are trained to apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when used intensively, often reverse such conditions. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine—a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and positive social connections—also provides effective prevention for these conditions.
