Paschal Baseball Coaches Show – April 22, 2025
Hosts: Chris Doelle Guest: Coach Clint Dunham
Episode Highlights:
- Introduction of Coach Clint Dunham: Chris Doelle welcomed Coach Clint Dunham to the show. Coach Dunham reported that things were going great, noting the warmer and sunny weather as the team prepared for a double header. This was the second double header of the year for them, which Coach Dunham mentioned felt new but they hoped for a similar positive outcome as the first one.
- Double Header Against Polytechnic: The upcoming double header was against Polytechnic, a team that is currently out of the running for the district title. While Paschal cannot catch Arlington Heights for the top spot, there was a slight possibility of falling below Trimble Tech in the standings. Coach Dunham stated that regardless of the outcome of this game, they know they are the second seed in the big school division. Despite this secured seeding, the team wants to finish strong and potentially look back having been close to competing for a district championship.
- Reflection on the Fossil Ridge Game: The conversation turned to the recent game against Fossil Ridge, which resulted in a 3-1 loss for Paschal. Coach Dunham described the loss as frustrating and noted that the team didn’t compete as well as they would have liked for a game they tried to treat like a district matchup. He felt that some individuals had good at-bats and the pitching was okay, but the overall energy and effort level might not have been as high as desired. Coach Dunham reflected that the coaching staff might have waited too long to step in and push the team, hoping leaders would emerge. However, he also acknowledged that it was a midweek, non-district game, where such fluctuations can occur.
- Approach to Finishing the District Season Strong: Chris Doelle inquired about the coaching philosophy regarding resting players towards the end of the district schedule. Coach Dunham emphasized the desire to go two and zero in the double header against Polytechnic. He believes that baseball is a sport where consistent play and seeing live pitching are crucial, unlike football or basketball where more days off might be beneficial. Coach Dunham indicated that players who will be important in the playoffs will continue to play in the remaining three games, while others may fill in as needed. The focus is on ensuring the team is in the right form heading into the playoffs.
- Game Against Mansfield Legacy: Looking beyond the district games, Coach Dunham highlighted a scheduled game against Mansfield Legacy. He noted that Mansfield Legacy is a very good 6A team, currently in second place in their district but with the potential to move into first. This game is strategically scheduled as a tune-up before the playoffs to expose the team to high-level talent and pitching they might encounter in the postseason. Coach Dunham expressed excitement about seeing their arms so it wouldn’t be a surprise in the playoffs.
- Sub-Varsity Success: Coach Dunham shared positive updates on the sub-varsity teams. The JV1 team tied for the district championship with Arlington Heights, and the JV2 team finished second behind Arlington Heights. Notably, five freshmen and sophomores were brought up to varsity this year and held their own. The JV2 team recently swept a doubleheader, with freshman pitcher throwing a perfect game over four innings, needing only 36 pitches (34 strikes). The JV1 team has an impressive record of 16 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties and will finish their season soon. The goal is to develop these players for varsity baseball in the future.
- Playoff Format: Chris Doelle asked about the playoff format compared to softball. Coach Dunham clarified that baseball now exclusively uses a three-game series format for the playoffs, a change from previous years where single games were an option. Coach Dunham expressed that he feels this format suits their team well this year, as they have good pitching depth compared to some previous years where they might have preferred a single-game matchup if the opponent had significantly stronger pitching.
- Potential Playoff Opponents: Coach Dunham stated that their first-round playoff opponent has been narrowed down to either Cleburne High School or Burleson High School. The final determination depends on the outcome of another series within their district this week. The coaching staff has seen both teams and believes they are competitive matchups. Coach Dunham noted that this year they don’t feel as overmatched as they have in some previous playoff appearances.
- Scouting Efforts: Coach Dunham detailed the scouting efforts being made for their potential playoff opponents. Coach Smith would be scouting Cleburne that night, while Coach Ker and Coach Dunham himself had each seen a Burleson game the previous week. They expect to have a good amount of information on either team by next week’s show.
- Goals for the Week: Coach Dunham expressed the hope for the varsity team to go 3-0 this week leading into the playoffs.
- Closing Remarks: Chris Doelle thanked Coach Dunham for the update and looked forward to discussing their playoff opponent in the next episode. Coach Dunham also expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming playoff run. Chris Doelle encouraged listeners to support Paschal Panthers baseball and shared information about internships with Lonestar Gridiron for those interested in sports media .
