Entertainment Lawyer Marty Singer joins Mike and Sallie on The Intersection podcast today! Described by his celebrity clients as a “lifesaver” and a “real-life superhero,” Marty has represented such stars as Eddie Murphy, Nicholas Cage, Stevie Wonder, James Caan, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Magic Johnson, Marie Osmond, Paula Abdul, and Scarlett Johansson.
Marty describes how he got involved in entertainment law and some of his major cases, including working both for and against Arnold Schwarzenegger. He talks about what Sallie describes as his signature “combative” style of letters of complaint to newsroom lawyers and how difficult it has become to kill stories in an age, which he believes began during the #MeToo movement, when it’s “you’re guilty until proven innocent.” He says the letters are an attempt to get fairer treatment in stories and prove with the facts that a reporter’s given narrative is inaccurate.
Marty talks about his mindset with regard to cancel culture, and how proper handling of legal elements of a case can often clear a client’s name outright, if it gets picked up by the right media. Marty shares some of his strategies for choosing credible outlets.
