This is a special episode of Raising Expectations. Special because I recorded it with my son, Harrison Connolly.
From 15 May to 15 June, we recognise Tourette's Awareness Month.
Most of us have a basic understanding of Tourette syndrome and how it can impact people's lives. Often, people think of the most widely recognised forms, such as coprolalia, where someone may suddenly swear or shout obscenities beyond their control.
The reality is that Tourette's is different for everyone.
Harrison was diagnosed in 2017. You may watch or listen to this episode and not notice much at all, but Tourette's is part of Harrison's life and something we embrace as a family. Like many people with Tourette's, his symptoms have changed over time, sometimes becoming more noticeable and at other times settling down.
For us, this episode is simply about raising awareness. Harrison lives an amazing life. He's ambitious, brave, determined, and proud to help people understand Tourette's a little better, while hopefully helping others realise they are not alone.
He's also a keen footballer and a budding musician. In fact, he recently performed a solo rendition of Wonderwall at a family wedding, guitar and vocals included. There isn't much that fazes him.
If you have 10 minutes, we hope you enjoy the conversation.
