A Huskies Health is back with Chris Bellamy, Former UConn Football star, now a mental health advocate and champion for father’s rights. We talk about the resources available at colleges for athletes struggling with mental health issues. Many are having trouble or long waits to be seen. We also look at CTE after the recent shooting in NYCChris understands the need for athletes to have access to mental health treatment and universities do not have enough staff to accommodate everyone. It is great that coaches are recognizing when their players are having problems off the field and are working to provide help. We received questions from viewers about kids having long waits to get into see a sports psychologist or therapist/clinician. If there isn't an opening for several weeks, most will decide it isn't worth going at all.Chris offered an excellent solution, which is how his hit podcast, All Black Men Need Therapy. After the George Floyd Execution, Chris and his friends were dealing with a lot of emotions, but not able to express them. His podcast became a platform that was a safe same for black men to share their feelings and open up. Chris believes something similar can happen at colleges with students or athletes. Forming small groups, talking, supporting each other, discussing issues or pain they are having mentally. Providing an outlet in a group setting, meet once a week or every two weeks, can do wonders because now people are starting conversations, discussions, and talking is the biggest step towards healing, We talk about the transfer portal and look back on the guys we played with at UConn who left that we literally never saw again. How difficult it must be for transfers to build relationships when they may be on a team for only a year. We finish by sharing some fun memories when we played together at UConn and meeting up on the 20th.
