Podcast Description
Welcome! We are your hosts, Dr. Beth Vukin MD and Dr. Kara Wada MD. We are both physicians with autoimmune diseases and we are here to talk about lessons we didn't learn in medical school. We are here to discuss lessons we learned by practicing medicine with our patients and also as patients ourselves to foster growth and learning amongst everyone: patients, medical providers and anyone wanting to learn more about themselves. We interview female-identifying physicians, who are also chronic illness patients to connect, collaborate, and share their unique stories and insights learned from navigating the healthcare system. In this group, we aim to facilitate focused discussions on various topics related to: -listening to our bodies-advocating for ourselves and our patients-finding our way in the face of adversityTogether, we can create a valuable resource that goes beyond the traditional medical school curriculum and brings awareness to the experiences and lessons that shape our journey as physicians and patients.

Lessons We Didn’t Learn in Med School uses the power of story telling and conversation to be the HEALING that is so needed in medicine. Join us, Drs. Beth Vukin and Kara Wada, two physicians turned patients, navigating our own chronic illness journeys.
We talk about the hard things and also the joyful things as well as the ridiculous. Along with our guests, we hope that having real talk about what it is like to be a patient as well as what it is like to be a medical professional, sheds light on things that are often in the dark. We celebrate science, resilience of the human spirit and the power of community.
“Lessons We Didn’t Learn in Med School” isn’t just a podcast; it’s a rallying cry for patients and health professionals alike to reclaim their voices and demand a healthcare system that listens and partners with patients. Together, we seek to end the stigma and loneliness of illness, foster compassion and connection and offer knowledge with practical advice for those living with and caring for people with chronic illness.
Well, we might have learned something about menopause but really, all that Beth and Kara can recall at this point is that it is the time when women stop having periods and some people have hot flashes.
Well, there is so much more!
We are delighted to have a menopause expert (and repeat guest! See episode 10) on the show. Dr. Susan Baumgaertel, MD. Dr. Baumgaertel is an internal medicine physician with over 30 years of experience.
Yes, we will talk about hormones and should people take them or not, but Susan offers us much more. She guides us through understanding this transition in life that lasts for many years. There is a mourning that takes place in this time, but also wisdom to be gained.
Women's health is often ignored, shrouded in mystery and can be incorrect. Join us as we offer information, lived experience and a community to talk about these issues.
She has written the book The Menopause Menu which is available on Amazon.
